How can I get involved? Even if you don't live near the Florida manatee's natural habitat, you can still contribute to conservation efforts. Our rivers and oceans are delicate ecosystems which we must protect. You can do small things in your day-to-day life, such as recycling and reducing water usage, that can have a very positive cumulative effect. You can also contribute more hands-on to local conservation efforts. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has an interactive map that you can use to learn more about endangered species in your state and what is being done to conserve them. If you ever vacation down in Florida or any other southeastern coastal state, be sure you know and abide by boat speed laws, pick up any nets or lines used during fishing, and please don't touch or feed the manatees! If you live in the Florida area, or will be there for an extended stay, and wish to volunteer or intern with manatee rescue or conservation groups, several are listed below, linked to their website.
