Manatees cannot survive in water less than 60°F, and thus are found relatively close to the equator, in the warm, shallow waters of rivers, bays, estuaries, and coastal areas. They move freely between bodies of water with differing salinity. The Florida manatee is found along the coastline and in waterways of the southeastern United States, venturing as far west as Texas and as far north as North Carolina during the summer[12]. During the winter, the Florida manatee stays primarily in its namesake state, often congregating in the waters near power plants, where hot water is continuously pumped out. Manatees evolved around 60 million years ago and have inhabited the waters around present day Florida for 1 million years[12].
